A national manufacturer operating high-volume factories, SCADA systems, and complex supply chains. With Industry 4.0 adoption underway, they required modern infrastructure capable of integrating factory floor systems, enabling edge analytics, and protecting both IT and OT zones from emerging cyber threats.

The Challenge.

Their legacy SCADA and production systems were not built for modern analytics, nor were they adequately secured. Data generated from factory equipment was delayed, inaccessible for real-time decisioning, and often vulnerable to external attack. Supply chain resilience was weakened by infrastructure gaps and a lack of predictive visibility.

The Solution.

We deployed a VMware Edge Compute and Tanzu Kubernetes architecture to support containerised IIoT workloads and near-instant analytics at the factory edge. NSX Federation was used to segment and protect operational zones from broader IT networks. Legacy production systems were virtualised with vSphere and vSAN for modern performance, while Aria Operations provided predictive maintenance insights and real-time analytics.

To meet POPIA obligations, Aria Operations for Logs provided real-time logging, compliance auditing, and centralised visibility. VMware Edge Compute was deployed to support near-instant data processing for medical imaging and remote diagnostics — ensuring front-line staff had actionable data when and where they needed it.

The Result.

Factory operations now run with real-time visibility, energy-efficient workload placement, and secured data zones between OT and IT. Time-to-insight for production anomalies has dropped dramatically, and the business now operates a resilient digital layer across its plants, ready to support modern supply chain dynamics and Industry 4.0 innovation.
